Neoprene vs. Breathable Waders
Neoprene waders are made up of neoprene rubber material that are filled with tiny nitrogen bubbles. In other words, they are very tough and have insulative properties hold warmth very well. Of course, these types of wader are much heavier and do not allow for excess moisture to exit.
Breathable waders were created to provide more flexibility. This, alongside a higher level of technology bring about a higher price point. Most hunters are willing to pay this amount due to the expect durability and comfort associated. When compared to neoprene wader, these are much more lightweight and are designed to draw moisture away from the body.

Neoprene Waders:
Breathable Waders:
Types of Waders: Chest, Waist, Hip
Chest - Chest waders are the most popular style of waders out their for waterfowl hunters. Due to the ever changing conditions seen while duck hunting, it's only natural that you buy a pair of waders that cover it all. No matter if you're setting up a spread in a drenched field or hunting in flooded timber with unknown bottoms, this type of wader with keep you prepared!
Fun Fact: The first manufactured waders were made in the 1850s by a company called Hodgman.
Waist - Waist style waders are beneficial for this duck hunters that consistently hunt known territory. If you're fully aware of the area around you and you know that the water will remain shallow, but you need the necessary protection, waist waders might be your best bet. The big benefit here is that they are little less constrictive and provide a little more versatility in the field.
Hip - It's pretty rare that you'd buy a pair of hip waders for all day hunting. This particulate type of waders is basically an extension of a knee high rubber boot. We'd only recommend this particular type as a back up for your standard boots, and ones that you might keep tucked away in your truck if you encounter some unexpected conditions in your normal duck hunting blind.
Insulated vs. Uninsulated
Nothing ruins a day of duck hunting faster than being wet and cold. Now, most of the waders out on the market are going to provide the same level of protection against water (I mean they're freaking waders), but what about the cold?
Each hunter is going to evaluate their own hunting terrain and conditions, and make this decision for themselves. If you're consistently in warmer conditions and prefer to use more layers to battle the cold, then uninsulated might be your best pick.
However, if you're hitting freezing temperatures more often than not, and you like to rely on fewer layers, or perhaps fewer insulated layers, then insulated waders are going to provide the most comfort when you're out in the woods.
Price and Quality
As you can tell from the limited list above, duck hunting waders come in all different shapes, size, and most importantly - price points. Like every piece of hunting gear, the price vs. quality decision is going to come up. But, of course, each hunter needs to evaluate their level of commitment and time to the game they are pursuing.
For those that hunt year around, and need to spread out their budget more it might be necessary to entertain some of the more reasonably priced options above. On the other hand, there are serious duck hunters out there, and I do mean serious! This level of dedication may warrant a higher-priced, longer-lasting wader that might hit the wallet hard initially, but will be there for years to come.
Review all the options above and make sure you read carefully before purchasing your next pair of waterfowl hunting waders.
